California Family Rights Act Expanded - Now Covers Employers with 5 or More Employees

October 22, 2020
Meggan Casas de Necochea

In September 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill (“SB”) 1383, which significantly expands the California Family Rights Act (“CFRA”) family and medical leave law under Government Code section 12945.2 by now applying it to all employers with 5 or more employees, adding the ability to care for a serious health condition of more family members, and eliminating other previous restrictions on the use of CFRA leave.

Employers with 5 or more employees should review and revise their policies and handbooks. The CFRA expansion is effective January 1, 2021.
